Why AI Search Is Becoming the New Front Page (And What Google Actually Says About It)

For two decades, "getting found online" meant one thing: ranking in Google's ten blue links. That assumption is breaking down, and it's worth being precise about how and why — because a lot of the advice circulating about "AEO" right now is speculation dressed up as strategy.
What's actually changing
A growing share of research now happens inside a conversational interface instead of a results page. Someone asks ChatGPT to compare tools in a category, or asks Perplexity what the standard approach is for a specific problem, and they get a synthesized answer with a handful of cited sources — not a scroll of links to evaluate themselves.
This matters because the mechanics of "getting found" are different in a synthesis model than in a ranking model:
- A search engine ranks pages. It shows you many options and lets you choose.
- An answer engine picks and paraphrases. It reads several sources, decides which claims are trustworthy and specific enough to use, and produces one answer. If you're not one of the sources it drew from, you're invisible in that specific conversation — there's no page two to be found on.
That's a real shift in incentive. Under the old model, being adequate and ranking on page one was enough to get some traffic. Under the new model, being one of the handful of sources an AI system trusts enough to cite is closer to a binary outcome.
What Google actually says about this
It's worth going to the primary source instead of the secondary "AEO guru" content that's proliferated around this topic. Google's own developer documentation on creating helpful content is unambiguous about the mechanism it rewards, and it predates the current AI-search hype cycle — this isn't new advice repackaged for a moment, it's the same underlying signal Google has always claimed to reward, now mattering more because AI systems consume the same web.
Google frames the self-assessment as three questions: Who created the content, How it was created, and Why. On "who," Google explicitly recommends bylines that lead to real background on the author. On "how," Google says AI-assisted content should disclose that fact when a reader would reasonably want to know. On "why," the guidance is blunt: content should exist primarily to help an existing audience, not primarily to attract search traffic.
Google also directly addresses a myth worth killing right now: word count is not a ranking factor. Their guidance literally asks, as a warning sign to watch for, "Are you writing to a particular word count because you've heard or read that Google has a preferred word count? (No, we don't.)" Longer content doesn't rank better because it's longer — it tends to rank better because depth, specificity, and complete coverage of a topic naturally take more words to deliver, and search and AI systems are actually rewarding the depth, not the length.
What this means practically
Three things follow directly from Google's own stated priorities, and they happen to be the same three things that make content citable by an AI system, not just rankable by a search engine:
- Be specific enough to extract. An AI system pulls concrete claims out of a page to build an answer. Vague brand language ("we're the leading solution for modern teams") gives it nothing to extract or attribute. A specific mechanism, number, or named comparison gives it something to cite.
- Show real authorship and expertise. A byline that says who wrote something, with real background, is a trust signal for a human reader and — per Google's own stated framework — for the ranking systems that try to approximate human trust.
- Structure the page so both humans and machines can parse it. Clear headings, a logical flow, and structured data (JSON-LD) that matches what's actually visible on the page give any system, human or automated, an easier time understanding what the page is actually about.
What we did on usecollision.com
We treated our own site as the first test case. We added Organization, SoftwareApplication, and FAQPage structured data, published an llms.txt (the emerging convention that hands AI crawlers a concise, structured summary instead of making them parse marketing copy), and made sure every schema claim has a matching visible section on the page — because both Google's guidance and basic logic say structured data that doesn't match what's shown to a visitor gets discounted.
The deeper shift is upstream of any one page, though. If your content strategy still treats "SEO" and "everything else" as separate line items, you're already behind: the surfaces where people look for answers just multiplied, and a growth function needs to publish coherently to all of them — not run ten disconnected side projects with a different owner for each channel.
That coordination problem — one voice, one memory, consistent facts everywhere your brand shows up — is the actual bottleneck for most teams trying to get discovered in 2026, and it's the problem we built Collision to solve.
